Joan M. Flynn

CHARLTON-Joan M. (Whealan) Flynn, 80, passed away peacefully Wednesday night, March 7, 2012 surrounded by her family. She leaves her husband John “Mike” Flynn, former Sheriff of Worcester County. They just celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on February 23rd.

She leaves their children, John McDonnell Flynn II of Sterling, Marianne (Flynn) and her husband Joseph Blanchet of Charlton, Kathleen Flynn and her husband David Richards, Jr. of Charlton, Kevin Joseph Flynn and his wife Kathy Flynn of Leicester, Joan Marie (Flynn) and her husband Stephen Ceely of Leicester, and Michael James Flynn and his wife Sasha Flynn, MD of Northborough; Grandchildren Dr. Kristin and Michael Blanchet, Brittany Flynn, Malachi, Mason, and Matthew Ceely, John Flynn, Shannon Flynn-Richards, Jacob and Sophia Flynn, Jesse Ceely, Alicia (Ceely) Ratliff, Deborah, Eric, Jesse, and David Richards, Anna and Robert McInnis. She also leaves two brothers, Robert Whealan and his wife Grace of Cedar Grove, NJ and John Whealan and his wife Alice of Auburn; and a sister-in-law, Fran Whealan of California. She was predeceased by her brother, Richard Whealan.

She was born in Rhinebeck, NY on April 19, 1931, daughter of Robert and Mae (Engelhardt) Whealan, and lived in Hasbrook Heights, NJ and graduated from St. Cecelia’s High School in 1949.

Joan was a devoted mother and homemaker. She worked for 20 years in the admitting office at Hahnemann Hospital.She was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Charlton. Joan was a life-long bowling enthusiast. Joan travelled extensively, to Europe, on cruises, and on cross-country trips. She enjoyed family gatherings and attending events of her children and grandchildren. Joan also belonged to numerous groups, including: Deputy Sheriffs Association, West Boylston Democratic Town Committee, The Emerald Club, and the Girl Scouts as a Troop Leader.

A special thank you goes out to the staff at Summit Eldercare for all their help and compassion over the last two years. Joan greatly enjoyed your program and staff. Also, thank you to the staff of the ER at St. Vincent’s Hospital for making Joan’s last hours peaceful.

The funeral will be held on Monday, March 12 from CALLAHAN & FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle Street, Worcester, with a Mass at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph’s Church, 10 H Putnam Road Extension, Charlton. Please go directly to church. Burial will follow in Westridge Cemetery, Charlton. Visiting hours are Sunday, March 11 from 4-8 PM at the funeral home.
