Joseph R. Girard, 87, passed away Thursday, February 16, 2012.
He leaves five children; Joseph, with whom he lived, Marie C. Prouty, Margaret M. Girard and Nancy M. Webster, all of Auburn, and Lisa Foley of Shrewsbury; ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was predeceased by three sons, Thomas, Stephen and Paul Girard and two daughters, Sheila VanCott and Terry Lowery. He also leaves a brother Raymond Girard of Oakton, VA; four sisters, Gertrude Girard of Grafton, Theresa Gusha of Holden, Gloria Lundy of Shrewsbury and Doris McManus of Bedford; many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by four brothers and five sisters.
He was born in Sanford, Maine, the son of Hormidas and Adelia (LaLiberte) Girard and and grew up in Worcester. He was a Navy Veteran of World War II and later served in the Air Force Reserves for many years. Joseph was a Worcester Police Officer for 16 years, retiring as a detective in the Vice Squad in 1971.
He was an accomplished boxer for many years, retiring in 1947 after winning the Golden Gloves Championship. In recent years, Joseph mostly enjoyed his bowling league at Colonial Bowling and swimming at the YMCA. He was an avid Red Sox and N.E. Patriots fan.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday, February 21, from CALLAHAN & FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle Street, with a Mass at 10:00 AM at St. John’s Church, 40 Temple Street. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Visiting hours are Monday, February 20 from 4-7 PM in the funeral home.
